A Bit of History
Welcome to our website! My name is Mona Bassett. I teach the intermediate grades of 4th-5th-6th at the Datil Elementary School, which is located on State Road 12, near the junction of US Highway 60. I have been a teacher in the school district for 29 years.
My teacher education began at Northwest Missouri State University with continued training at the University of La Verne in California and Western New Mexico University.
I loved the climate of the West and decided to make Datil my home in 1978. Datil struck a chord with me. It had friendly service stations, a post office, and a one stop country store with food, fuel, and a comfortable bed. But most importantly, it had an elementary school that needed teachers.
Since that beginning, there have been progressive changes in the Datil School through remodeling, renovations, technologies, and policies, but still it remains the same: a small country school with an extended family that includes 23 students in grades K-6.
Faces have come and gone but the wonder remains in seeing the growth and great successes of students through the years. Their return visits and thanks provide a sweet memory. It continues to be an honor and a pleasure helping students meet new goals in their preparation for secondary school in Quemado.
